My hair is highly-porous and I often get questions about my hair-care routine. I’ll do my best to give you the most detailed answers.
High-porosity hair easily absorbs all ingredients and water. Still, this doesn’t mean problem-free hair care. You can see that by looking at this type of strands: split, very dry, brittle, frizzy, static… How to fix highly-porous hair then?
High Porosity Hair Profile
Breakage, stiffness, dullness and splitting are common. The pigment comes off more quickly. High porosity hair is easily damaged so it goes dry at a blistering pace. You can easily cause it to break and go unruly… This doesn’t sound like dream hair, does it?
Why is my hair highly-porous?
We are not born with highly-porous hair. The porosity increases due to many different things like color-treating, bleaching or permanent wave. The condition of hair worsens if we use wrong conditioning products not suiting the hair type. Other mistakes that cause high porosity include sleeping with wet hair, tight hairstyles, blow-drying, heat-styling, etc. Unfortunately, some medication and diseases make our hairdos worse too. I confess to making lots of mistakes that I didn’t even realize in the past.
How to care for high-porosity hair?
Above all else, high-porosity hair needs repair. Remember that you can easily make it worse, though. It’s best to pick mild products formulated without harsh detergents and silicones. Instead, choose natural oils – since I started using them, my hair’s been so much better. Hair oils strengthen the follicles so they greatly enhance the hair and boost growth. Don’t forget to protect the hair against damage: use hair mists and sprays every day to keep it safe from external aggressors.
Caring for highly-porous hair is a tricky task. Keep your strands hydrated and treat them to a keratin treatment from time to time. Keratin is a natural building block of hair which helps fix any damage. The keratin in hair-care products is usually hydrolyzed, which means better absorption. Securing the hair ends is also a must because they lose hydration the fastest. Hair serum or oils create a powerful protective layer.
Try to use a dryer just from time to time. Let the hair air dry instead. If you prefer to use a blow-dryer, using a protective product beforehand is essential. Use only cool airflow because it has a brilliant effect on strands, sealing the cuticles to damage-proof the hair and make it shine.
I love messy braids or ponytails on wet hair because they are great at taming the frizz and preventing damage. Never forget to get a good hair mask! Apple cider vinegar rinse works great making hair smoother and balancing pH on scalp.
I can also see my hair’s been looking way better since I started to get regular trims. I used to avoid salons and kept my damaged, awful hair, dreaming of long tresses. Since I started getting rid of damaged ends on a regular basis, my hair’s been much healthier.
